Bord na Móna has a diverse portfolio of products in a commoditised and increasingly competitive market. Our products range in size from 0.5kg to 40kg and are packaged in a variety of materials, each with their own design limitations. Before working with Mesh, the naming and packaging architecture were inconsistent across the portfolio and hadn’t considered how our products were presented at the point of purchase. Furthermore, we had new brand guidelines which needed to be incorporated into the architecture.
We briefed Mesh to develop a new packaging architecture, naming structure and packaging design solution that would be distinctive, ownable, convey quality and leverage the strength of the Bord na Móna brand across the full portfolio to create powerful stand out to resonate with trade customers and consumers alike.
In response to our brief, Mesh put forward a very clear and logical approach. This, along with their past experience and specialist focus on packaging design, gave us real confidence in their ability to deliver the best solution. Over a period of 9 months, we worked closely with Mesh who immersed themselves in the fuels category in order to understand exactly what was required. They were consistently flexible and available to work with, and in a truly professional manner, were excellent at absorbing pressure. Their design options were very strong and progressive with clear thought rationale behind every element.
The result was a category leading, stand out packaging architecture and design that addressed not only our brief but additional requirements that emerged as the project evolved. Our brand visibility at the point of purchase was very strong and instantly recognisable. The naming structure has put shape on the full portfolio and is flexible enough to incorporate future NPD seamlessly.
Ultimately we found that Mesh really worked hard to understand our business and listened to the challenges we wanted to overcome. The proof of their great work was the very positive response we received from the trade and subsequent copycat behaviour by our competitors! My name is Declan Gannon and I am founder and director of Shanvalley Innovative Food Company Ltd, which operates the Karma – Eat Right Live Right brand. O’Hanlon Herbs approached Bord Bia for support in relation to relation to researching and developing a range of niche seasonal potted herbs, also as a celebratory range for our 30th year of business.
The superbrands broke down process into a combination of research, consumer feedback and packaging development.
Mesh Design met us initially for a debriefing, and from the outset we found their approach was based on listening, two way feedback and constructively moving forward. At the same time they came with original ideas which had the effect of refreshing the category while keeping the essence of the brand.
The net effect was a successful launch at Bloom 2017, with an immediate national high profile promotion by a retailer. The new branding was also taken up by a major client based on the concept and packaging presentation and will also get a national listing in summer 2018 for several weeks.
